    FAQ: Tax Preparation Services

Who needs to file a tax return in France?

All individuals considered tax residents in France, whether in Calais or elsewhere, is required to declare their income to the French tax administration. This applies to employees, self-employed professionals, entrepreneurs, and retirees. Even if a taxpayer falls below the taxable threshold, they may still need to file a return to access certain tax benefits or to prevent fines in case of future regularization.

Non-French citizens living in France must also report their earnings if they have their primary residence in France or carry out business within the country. Similarly, those who own property in France, regardless of their residence status, are required to file a return for any rental income received.

What are the deadlines and penalties for late filing?

Each year, the French tax office publishes specific submission timelines for annual tax declarations, generally scheduled between mid-May and early June, depending on the place of residence and filing method (by post or electronically).

As registered tax advisors, we have access to specialized tax software that enables us to process your tax return as early as January 1st. To guarantee precision, optimize your tax situation, and reduce time pressure, we suggest getting in touch as early as possible.

Failure to meet the official due dates may trigger late fees, making early preparation even more important.

A late tax return leads to an additional tax penalty: a 10% surcharge applies if no official reminder is issued, increasing up to 40% if the French tax office officially issues a notice. Late payment interest of 0.20% per month is also applied to the balance. If the omission is deemed intentional or malicious, more serious consequences may be applied.

How can I legally reduce my income tax?

There are several compliant approaches to minimize taxation in France. Real estate investment is an efficient way to enhance your tax situation, particularly through the LMNP regime, which offers significant tax advantages.

Other tax-efficient strategies include the Malraux law, which grants major tax relief for the renovation of historic properties; the property deficit scheme, which allows landlords to deduct renovation costs; and the Monuments Historiques scheme, offering important tax relief for the conservation of listed monuments.

A life insurance policy is another advantageous option: after eight years, it benefits from a reduced tax rate, making it an smart option for wealth transfer and minimizing taxes.

SME investment or tax-incentivized funds like FIP/FCPI structures can also provide a tax reduction of up to 25% of the invested amount, subject to conditions.

There are many more possibilities! Our consultants are here to recommend the best fiscal strategies for greater efficiency.

How to file your tax return online?

The online tax declaration system is the recommended approach of the fiscal authorities in France, managed on the official government website impots.gouv.fr.

However, as accredited professionals, we simplify the process for our clients. Instead of logging into their personal tax account, they simply submit a custom form on our website.

Once the information is entered, we manage the full tax submission and submit it directly to the tax authorities via the EDI system, ensuring precision, compliance, and reliability—without any need for clients to access impots.gouv.fr.

After submission, the tax administration assesses the amount of tax owed or any eligible reimbursement.
